Forms of Selfishness!

I spend a lot of time on the multi-lane motorways of Thailand. One of the most distressing encounters is when you are cruising on the fast lane only to find a car in front of you driving substantially slower than even the speed limit (instead of the allowed 120 kph they may be driving at 90 kph). Little do such drivers realise that this is against the common law of driving, but also their willingness to occupy the lane smacks of sheer selfishness. On deeper reflection that is what selfishness is all about; putting oneself above others. All of the great religions maintain that this is against the spirit of good humanity. The Bible goes a step further by showing that selfishness is the very essence of humanity mired in sin. So when Jesus was questioned about which law was the most essential, he simply answered, 'Love God with all your heart, soul and strength.' He then added a second idea, 'Love your neighbour as yourself' (Matt 22:37-39). Love is not only the antithesis of selfishness, it seeks never to block another person's progress and finds pleasure in others' success. When every believer lives this way, a wonderful tapestry is created. That is how God intended us to live!
